Paddy Byrne’s certified organic farm is situated in a picturesque location, overlooking the seaside village of Skerries and adjacent to historic Ardgillan House and Gardens.
The farm has been in the Byrne family since at least the 1880’s and the ruins of the old farmhouse are still on site. Originally run by Paddy’s grandmother and great uncle, the farm was very diverse, servicing most of the food needs of the locals, ranging from livestock, poultry and dairy, to fruit and vegetables. Some of the original orchards survive to this day.
As a child, Paddy remembers many old farming traditions that have mainly died out, such as his grandmother churning butter, or going down to the shoreline with his grand uncle on the horse and cart to help with harvesting seaweed, that would be later layered up with their own farmyard manure and used in the potato beds.
It is no surprise that Paddy embraced organic farming methods when he took over the vegetable production on the farm. In addition to currently farming five acres single handed, he also looks after approximately 300 happy organic egg laying hens and 50 equally happy ducks!
Certified organic salad crops, vegetables, squashes, hard and soft fruit; organic duck and hen eggs; preserves - jams, marmalades, chutneys, and condiments.
